Rank is not a calendar promise. Graduates targeting CSE 2026 usually need one serious year. College students usually take two. After Class 12 you prepare for three years — you still need a degree and age 21 to appear.
Graduate: About 10–12 months
College: Usually 2 years
After 12th: Usually 3 years
Direct answer
Most first-time graduates need 10–12 months of serious work (a 1-year CSE line). College students usually take 2 years beside the degree. After Class 12 the honest calendar is 3 years of foundation — you cannot write CSE at 18; you need a graduate degree and age 21. Rank is hours plus evaluated writing, not a poster that says “clear in 90 days”.
FIRST IAS INSTITUTE publishes 1-year, 2-year and 3-year programmes (batch 35, weekly Prelims + Mains mocks). Crash on this site means revision for people who already have notes — not a beginner clock.
Eligibility (age 21, graduate degree, attempt limits) is separate from how long you study. Official outline: Eligibility criteria · Exam structure.
2 Why “one more year” is not the same as a 3-year foundation
A 3-year seat after Class 12 is NCERT first, then printed books, daily writing and weekly mocks while you complete the degree. It is not permission to sit CSE the year you leave school.
A graduate who already has NCERT and still needs CSAT + writing can use a 1-year calendar. A graduate with zero GS who buys a 1-year crash because “time is short” usually burns the attempt. Foundation language on this site means the NCERT-first sequence — typically 2-year or 3-year. See UPSC Foundation Course for Beginners.
The classroom product is still weekly Prelims + Mains mocks in a batch of 35, with copies checked. A PDF is a calendar, not a substitute for marked answers. Method: methodology.
4 Crash is revision, not a beginner clock
Do not buy crash language if you are new. Crash on this site means revision for people who already have notes. Beginners need calendar space for NCERT, CSAT and writing.
Only if the GS base, CSAT and writing already exist and you are revising. FIRST IAS does not sell a 6-month beginner promise. Graduates with a real foundation still typically need 10–12 months.
Can I write UPSC just after Class 12?
No. You need a graduate degree and minimum age 21. After-12th coaching is a 3-year (sometimes 2-year) foundation during college — not an attempt the year you leave school.
Is 1 year enough for a complete beginner after graduation?
It can be, if counselling is honest: NCERT first, then printed books, CSAT and daily writing. Zero-GS graduates who skip NCERT for a 1-year crash usually waste the attempt. Many beginners are better on 2-year.
How many hours a day for a 1-year plan?
Full-time graduates often need 8–10 focused hours including writing and tests. Working professionals split the same syllabus over 1–2 years with live or recorded slots — hours, not slogans.
Does a longer course cost more at FIRST IAS?
Yes on the 2026 grid: 1 year ₹1,47,500, 2 year ₹2,17,500, 3 year ₹2,71,500 without Optional (classroom). With Optional is higher. See Fees 2026.
Match duration to your attempt year
Say school, college, graduate or job — and CSE 2026 vs 2027. Counselling maps 1 / 2 / 3 year, not a crash from zero.
