Not mandatory — useful when copies are actually checked
Is IAS Coaching Necessary?
UPSC does not require coaching. Self-study clears the exam if the booklist is short and answers are marked. Coaching is a tool for syllabus order, daily writing and weekly Prelims + Mains mocks — which is why FIRST IAS INSTITUTE caps batches at 35.
UPSC rule: No coaching requirement
Self-study needs: NCERT + PYQ + marked copies
FIRST IAS batch: 35 students
Direct answer
IAS coaching is not mandatory. UPSC has no coaching requirement. Self-study works if you finish NCERT, a short booklist, previous-year papers and get copies checked. Coaching is useful when you need a syllabus order, daily evaluated writing and weekly Prelims + Mains mocks — the reason FIRST IAS INSTITUTE keeps batches at 35, not 150–200.
Hall size is not a method. Unmarked PDFs are not mentorship. If you can already finish the limited sources and get honest copy feedback, you do not need a classroom to be eligible.
1 Self-study vs coaching — what actually changes
Need
Self-study
Coaching that is worth the fee
Syllabus order
You must sequence NCERT → standard books → CA yourself
Published method: NCERT first, then printed chapter-wise books, then newspaper classes
Answer writing
Works only if someone competent marks copies
Daily writing checked by Lead Mentors in a batch of 35
Prelims + Mains tests
You must buy or design a weekly cycle
Weekly Prelims + Mains mocks inside the course — not postponed until “after Prelims”
CSAT
Easy to skip until it fails you
CSAT is on every published 1 / 2 / 3 year FIRST IAS fee line
Cost
Books + exam fees (see cost page)
Published 2026 grid ₹1,47,500–₹3,21,500; books included
Stay on self-study if all of this is already true:
You will finish Class 6–12 NCERT and a short GS list — not forty market titles. Guide: Best UPSC books for beginners.
You practise official PYQs on a clock. Archive: PYQ archive.
Someone actually marks Mains answers (a teacher, a serious peer group with a rubric — not an unmarked PDF).
CSAT has a weekly slot. It is qualifying. A high GS-I score does not save a failed Paper II.
Working professionals who already have notes often do better with online live or recorded hours than with a second orientation of NCERT in a packed hall.
3 When coaching saves attempts
Coaching earns its fee when the problem is feedback and sequence, not “more PDFs”:
You are a beginner and do not know NCERT from Optional-level books in week one. Start: Foundation for Beginners.
You write, but nobody reads the copy. FIRST IAS daily writing is checked by Lead Mentors headed by Smt. Manikuntala Ghosh because the batch is 35.
You treat Mains as “after Prelims”. The published method runs weekly Prelims + Mains together. Progress log: how we measure progress.
You are a repeater whose first attempt had lectures but no evaluated answers. See Repeaters.
Duration still has to match the profile: How many years are required?. A 1-year seat without NCERT is how attempts burn.
4 Do UPSC toppers take coaching?
Some do, some do not. Selection lists are not a coaching advertisement. What toppers share is a limited source list, PYQ practice and writing that was corrected. A longer write-up: Do UPSC toppers take coaching?.
FIRST IAS INSTITUTE (since 2009, Hauz Khas and Sector 14, online live) sells a method — NCERT, printed books, daily copy-check, weekly mocks — not a claim that the Commission requires an institute. Comparison: FIRST IAS vs other institutes.
Yes. UPSC does not require coaching. You need NCERT, a short booklist, PYQs, CSAT practice and marked Mains answers. Coaching is optional infrastructure for sequence and copy-check.
Is self-study enough for a complete beginner?
It is enough if you will actually finish NCERT in order and get writing marked. Many beginners lose a year collecting books. A 2-year or 3-year foundation batch exists for that sequence — not because the form demands an institute.
Is online coaching as useful as classroom?
Only if copies are still checked and mocks still run. FIRST IAS online live uses the same 2026 fee grid and couriers printed books; live batches still cap at 35. Recorded is for hours that clash with a job — not a thinner syllabus.
Why does FIRST IAS cap the batch at 35?
So daily answers and weekly Prelims + Mains tests can be evaluated. Halls of 150–200 typically cannot read that many copies. See the batch-size page.
Should I join coaching before reading NCERT?
No. Start NCERT. FIRST IAS classroom sequence also starts with NCERT. Paying for a seat does not replace Class 6–12.
Decide coaching vs self-study honestly
Say beginner, repeater or working professional. Counselling maps 1 / 2 / 3 year only if a seat will actually get copies read.
