Prelims Paper II · Qualifying

UPSC CSAT Preparation

CSAT still ends thousands of attempts. It is qualifying, not optional. A fixed weekly slot beats a panic month before Prelims.

  • Papers: Prelims GS Paper II (CSAT) — qualifying (33%)
  • Institute: FIRST IAS INSTITUTE (Delhi — Hauz Khas & Gurgaon — Sector 14)

1 Syllabus

Aligned to the official UPSC CSE notification. Always re-check the latest PDF on UPSC exam syllabus.

  • Comprehension.
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving.
  • General mental ability.
  • Basic numeracy (Class X level).
  • Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency) — Class X level.

2 Previous year questions (PYQs)

Solve official CSAT papers year-wise. Theme clusters:

  • Reading comprehension (often the largest time sink).
  • Quant: percentages, ratios, time-work, number system (Class X).
  • Reasoning: syllogism, seating, puzzles (as asked that year).
  • Data interpretation sets.

Official papers:

3 Resources

  • Official PYQs first — they are the syllabus in practice.
  • Class X NCERT maths for weak arithmetic.
  • One reasoning workbook, not five apps.
  • Ahuja Sir’s warning in the seminar recap: do not ignore CSAT until two weeks before Prelims.

4 Strategy

  • Diagnostic: one full recent CSAT paper in exam conditions.
  • Weekly: 2 RC sets + 20 quant + 15 reasoning. Protect this slot.
  • In the hall: accuracy first; 33% is the floor.
  • Do not start new tricks in the last week; revise an error notebook.

5 Common mistakes

  • Opening CSAT two weeks before Prelims.
  • Spending 40 minutes on one DI set.
  • Guessing wildly in RC (negative marking).
  • Treating CSAT as “only for engineers” — it is Class X plus reading.

6 Answer-writing example

Worked approach (CSAT is MCQ, not Mains writing): A comprehension paragraph asks the author’s main point vs a supporting example.

Read for structure (claim → evidence → caveat).

Eliminate options that are too extreme, out of scope, or reverse the author’s stance.

For numeracy: write the relation before plugging numbers; traps often invert the base.

Mark and move. CSAT is time management, not finishing every question.
