GS Paper I · Prelims

UPSC Geography Preparation

Geography scores when you can draw a process (monsoon, cyclone, soil) and locate it on an Indian map. Diagrams are not decoration; they are marks.

  • Papers: Prelims GS-I · Mains GS Paper I
  • Institute: FIRST IAS INSTITUTE (Delhi — Hauz Khas & Gurgaon — Sector 14)

1 Syllabus

Aligned to the official UPSC CSE notification. Always re-check the latest PDF on UPSC exam syllabus.

  • Prelims: Indian and World Geography — physical, social, economic geography of India and the world.
  • Mains GS-I: Salient features of world’s physical geography.
  • Distribution of key natural resources; factors of location of primary, secondary and tertiary industries.
  • Important geophysical phenomena — earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic activity, cyclone; changes in geographical features.
  • Critical geographical features, flora and fauna, and the effects of such changes.

2 Previous year questions (PYQs)

Typical Geography PYQ themes (confirm wording in official PDFs):

  • Monsoon mechanism, El Niño / La Niña, Indian Ocean Dipole.
  • Soils of India, cropping patterns, irrigation.
  • Cyclones, earthquakes, landslides — location and mitigation (overlap Disaster Management in GS-III).
  • Industrial location, ports, mineral belts.
  • Climate change impacts on Himalaya / coasts (link Environment).

Official papers:

3 Resources

  • NCERT Class 6–12 Geography (especially 11th physical + Indian physical).
  • GC Leong — selected chapters for landforms and climate, not cover-to-cover cramming.
  • School atlas — daily 15-minute map drill.
  • IMD, ISRO snapshots for current location-based questions.
  • Link disasters with Environment.

4 Strategy

  • One concept + one India map + one diagram per topic.
  • Prelims: location MCQs and statement-based physical processes.
  • Mains: always add a simple labelled diagram.
  • Do not treat World Geography as a Geography-optional paper; stick to GS-I lines.

5 Common mistakes

  • Reading advanced geomorphology books meant for Geography optional.
  • Skipping atlas practice.
  • Writing GS-I answers without a sketch.
  • Confusing Environment current affairs with physical geography fundamentals.
