GS Paper III · Prelims

UPSC Environment Preparation

Environment is ecology fundamentals plus conventions and India-specific conservation. COP headlines without food chains and cycles fail Prelims.

  • Papers: Prelims GS-I · Mains GS Paper III
  • Institute: FIRST IAS INSTITUTE (Delhi — Hauz Khas & Gurgaon — Sector 14)

1 Syllabus

Aligned to the official UPSC CSE notification. Always re-check the latest PDF on UPSC exam syllabus.

  • Prelims: General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change — that do not require subject specialisation.
  • Mains GS-III: Conservation, environmental pollution and degradation, environmental impact assessment.
  • Disaster and disaster management (often paired with geography/climate).

2 Previous year questions (PYQs)

Typical Environment PYQ themes:

  • National parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, Ramsar sites (map-based).
  • Wildlife (Protection), Forest, EPA, CAMPA (as asked).
  • Climate: UNFCCC, Paris, NDCs (themes).
  • Pollution: air, plastic, e-waste, rivers.
  • Species, IUCN categories, invasive species.

Official papers:

3 Resources

  • NCERT Biology Class 12 — ecology unit; Geography environment chapters.
  • One concise environment compilation + map notebook.
  • MoEFCC and ISFR summaries; IPCC SPM (selected).
  • Link physical processes via Geography.

4 Strategy

  • Static ecology first, then parks and conventions.
  • Maintain an India map of protected areas you actually revise.
  • Mains: problem → law/institution → community/technology → conclusion.
  • Prelims: PYQ species and site lists beat random current affairs.

5 Common mistakes

  • Rote-learning 200 park names with no map.
  • Writing climate essays in a pollution question.
  • Ignoring EIA and disaster management until Mains.
  • Mixing summit news with ecology MCQs without the science.

6 Answer-writing example

Sample Mains demand: “Environmental Impact Assessment in India is often criticised as a clearance ritual. Suggest reforms.”

Introduction: EIA as an ex-ante tool under the EPA framework (conceptually).

Body — gaps: delayed public hearing, consultant conflict, weak post-clearance monitoring.

Body — reforms: independent scrutiny, digital tracking, community consent in sensitive areas, strategic EIA.

Conclusion: Ease of doing business cannot mean ease of damaging commons.
