GS Paper I · Prelims

UPSC History Preparation

History in UPSC is not a timeline contest. Prelims rewards accuracy on modern India and culture; Mains rewards causes, consequences and linkages with polity and society.

  • Papers: Prelims GS-I · Mains GS Paper I
  • Institute: FIRST IAS INSTITUTE (Delhi — Hauz Khas & Gurgaon — Sector 14)

1 Syllabus

Aligned to the official UPSC CSE notification. Always re-check the latest PDF on UPSC exam syllabus.

  • Prelims: History of India and Indian National Movement; art and culture themes that overlap with GS-I.
  • Mains GS-I: Indian culture — art forms, literature and architecture from ancient to modern.
  • Modern Indian history from the mid-18th century, significant events, personalities, issues.
  • The Freedom Struggle — its various stages and important contributors from different parts of the country.
  • Post-independence consolidation and reorganisation.
  • History of the world — events from the 18th century (industrial revolution, world wars, redrawal of borders, colonisation, decolonisation, political philosophies).

2 Previous year questions (PYQs)

Use official papers on this site rather than memory. Typical History PYQ themes:

  • Revolt of 1857 — causes, nature, regional spread (Prelims + Mains).
  • Socio-religious reform movements and their limits.
  • Gandhian mass movements vs revolutionary nationalism.
  • Art, architecture and literature (temple styles, Bhakti–Sufi, modern painting).
  • World history: French Revolution, World Wars, decolonisation (Mains).

Official papers:

3 Resources

  • Class 6–12 NCERT History (old + new as needed) — start here, do not skip.
  • Spectrum / standard modern India notes for the national movement.
  • Limited art & culture notes — multiple revisions, not a new book every month.
  • World history from NCERT / class notes mapped only to GS-I lines.
  • Map practice for sites, battles and movements.
  • How to read NCERTs: How to read NCERT for UPSC.

4 Strategy

  • Finish NCERT timelines first. Then one standard modern India source. Culture as a separate weekly slot.
  • Tag every current-affairs heritage story (ASI, UNESCO, museum) to a static culture heading.
  • For Mains, practise “why / how / significance” not “what happened in which year”.
  • Revise PYQs before adding a new book.

5 Common mistakes

  • Memorising dates without causes and consequences.
  • Ignoring art & culture until two weeks before Prelims.
  • Writing Mains answers as a story with no headings or present-day link.
  • Starting world history from random playlists instead of the GS-I syllabus lines.

6 Answer-writing example

Sample Mains demand: “The 19th-century socio-religious reform movements were both emancipatory and limited. Discuss.”

Introduction (40–50 words): Place reforms in colonial social context; name 2–3 strands (Brahmo, Aligarh, Jyotiba Phule).

Body — emancipatory: education, widow remarriage, caste critique, print public sphere.

Body — limits: upper-caste leadership, urban bias, revivalism, incomplete reach among peasants and Adivasis.

Conclusion: Link to later mass nationalism and constitutional values without sermonising.
