GS Paper III · Prelims

UPSC Economy Preparation

Economy in UPSC is concepts first (GDP, inflation, fiscal/monetary policy), then Budget numbers and schemes. Reverse that order and Prelims becomes a lottery.

  • Papers: Prelims GS-I · Mains GS Paper III
  • Institute: FIRST IAS INSTITUTE (Delhi — Hauz Khas & Gurgaon — Sector 14)

1 Syllabus

Aligned to the official UPSC CSE notification. Always re-check the latest PDF on UPSC exam syllabus.

  • Prelims: Economic and Social Development — sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector.
  • Mains GS-III: Indian economy — planning, mobilisation of resources, growth, development and employment.
  • Inclusive growth; government budgeting.
  • Agriculture, irrigation, MSP, PDS, food processing, land reforms, industrial policy.
  • Infrastructure — energy, ports, roads, airports, railways; investment models.

2 Previous year questions (PYQs)

Typical Economy PYQ themes:

  • Inflation types, monetary policy tools, RBI.
  • Fiscal deficit, FRBM, GST architecture.
  • Poverty, unemployment, labour.
  • Agriculture: MSP, food security.
  • External sector: CAD, rupee, WTO issues.

Official papers:

3 Resources

  • NCERT Class 11–12 Economics (introductory macro + Indian economic development).
  • One standard Indian Economy book or class notes — not three.
  • Latest Budget + Economic Survey selected chapters.
  • Pair with Environment and S&T.

4 Strategy

  • Build a one-page glossary (repo rate, CRR, SLR, CAD, GST).
  • Every scheme: ministry, objective, one criticism.
  • Prelims: PYQ elimination; Mains: one data line, then analysis.
  • Weekly: one Budget/Survey micro-note + one 10-marker.

5 Common mistakes

  • Chasing every newspaper number without the concept behind it.
  • Treating Economy as current affairs only.
  • No diagrams (GST structure, inflation sketch).
  • Ignoring agriculture and infrastructure.

6 Answer-writing example
