Mains Paper I

UPSC Essay Preparation

Essay is organised thought under a clock. UPSC rewards a clear thesis, multi-dimensional body, and an ending that is earned — not a GS dump.

  • Papers: Mains Essay (two essays, 125 marks each)
  • Institute: FIRST IAS INSTITUTE (Delhi — Hauz Khas & Gurgaon — Sector 14)

1 Syllabus

Aligned to the official UPSC CSE notification. Always re-check the latest PDF on UPSC exam syllabus.

  • Candidates write essays on multiple topics. Credit for concise, relevant, effective expression.
  • In practice: typically one essay from each of two sections (philosophical/abstract and theme-based).
  • No separate chapter list — use GS knowledge, but do not staple GS-I to IV together.

2 Previous year questions (PYQs)

Typical Essay PYQ themes (see official Essay PDFs for exact titles):

  • Philosophical: truth, freedom, education, technology and humanity.
  • India: federalism, women, inequality, environment, governance.
  • Global: war and peace, multilateralism, climate.

Official papers:

3 Resources

  • Your GS notes + a thin anecdote file you actually remember.
  • Past Essay papers — write 1–2 full essays a month after basics exist.
  • Link Ethics, History, IR.

4 Strategy

  • Spend 10–12 minutes choosing and brainstorming; 80–90 minutes writing.
  • Structure: hook + thesis; 4–6 dimensions; conclusion returns to thesis.
  • One idea per paragraph. Balance gloom and constructive close.

5 Common mistakes

  • Choosing a topic you cannot sustain for 1000–1200 words.
  • No thesis — a list of GS points.
  • Fake data and fake quotes.
  • Leaving the second essay thin because the first ate 2 hours.

6 Answer-writing example

Sample topic: “Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master.” Outline only.

Thesis: Tools extend human agency until they start setting the ends (attention, surveillance, labour).

Historical: print, industrial machines, nuclear — servant vs master moments.

Present: DPI and health tech as servant; addictive platforms, deepfakes as master risk.

Ethics/governance: consent, audit, human-in-the-loop. Conclusion: mastery is political choice, not destiny.
